West Virginia was the only state that gained admission to the Union during the American Civil War.

Between 250 and 150 B.C., the Adena people built what is known as Grave Creek Mound in Marshall County. Now standing 62 feet tall with a 240-foot diameter, it is the largest conical burial mound in the United States. In 1838, two men dug their way into the mound, exposing a burial chamber with skeletons and jewelry.

The Greenbrier, a luxurious resort in the Allegheny Mountains in White Sulphur Springs, was used at the outset of World War II to house diplomats from Germany, Italy and Japan until American diplomats detained overseas could be returned home safely in exchange. In 1942, the U.S. Army purchased the hotel and converted it into a hospital where, over the course of four years, more than 24,000 soldiers were treated.

In 1942, West Virginia enacted a law that required students and teachers to salute the American flag and recite the Pledge of Allegiance. When Walter Barnette, a Jehovah’s Witness, refused to do so on the grounds that it contradicted his religious beliefs, he was expelled from school. On June 14, 1943, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette that forcing individuals to salute the flag was a violation of their freedom of speech and religion.

Two apple varieties originated in West Virginia: the Grimes Golden apple, discovered on a farm near Wellsburg in the early 19th century; and the Golden Delicious apple, found on a farm in Clay County in the early 20th century.     PREAMBLE

    Since through Divine Providence we enjoy the blessings of civil, political and religious liberty, we, the people of West Virginia, in and through the provisions of this Constitution, reaffirm our faith in and constant reliance upon God and seek diligently to promote, preserve and perpetuate good government in the state of West Virginia for the common welfare, freedom and security of ourselves and our posterity.

    The state of West Virginia is, and shall remain, one of the United States of America. The constitution of the United States of America, and the laws and treaties made in pursuance thereof, shall be the supreme law of the land.

    The government of the United States is a government of enumerated powers, and all powers not delegated to it, nor inhibited to the states, are reserved to the states or to the people thereof. Among the powers so reserved to the states is the exclusive regulation of their own internal government and police; and it is the high and solemn duty of the several departments of government, created by this constitution, to guard and protect the people of this state from all encroachments upon the rights so reserved.

    Legislative Power

    The legislative power shall be vested in a Senate and House of Delegates. The style of their acts shall be, "Be it enacted by the Legislature of West Virginia."

    Judicial Power

    Authority

    The governor is the chief executive of West Virginia. She is the commander-in-chief of the state's military forces (§ 12) and is charged by the West Virginia Constitution with carrying out the state's laws.

    Qualifications

    a citizen of the United States, a resident of West Virginia for at least give years preceding the election, a duly qualified elector of West Virginia, at least 30 years old.

    Election

    An election for governor, secretary of state, auditor, treasurer, commissioner of agriculture and attorney general shall be held at such times and places as may be prescribed by law.

    Term of Office

    Their terms of office shall be four years, and shall commence on the first Monday after the second Wednesday of January next after their election.

    Limit on Tenure

    West Virginia governors are restricted to two consecutive terms in office, after which they must wait one term before being eligible to run again.

    Qualification age

    At least 30 years old.

    The Auditor
    Authority

    The auditor is West Virginia's official bookkeeper, responsible for ensuring that state funds are withdrawn and deposited legally. As the state's chief inspector, the auditor is responsible for conducting audits of county governments, county boards of election, municipalities, boards, commissions, districts, offices, public authorities, public corporations, and county boards of education.

    Qualifications

    No person, except citizens entitled to vote, shall be elected or appointed to any state, county or municipal office; but the governor and judges must have attained the age of thirty, and the attorney general and senators the age of twenty-five years, at the beginning of their respective terms of service; and must have been citizens of the state for five years next preceding their election or appointment, or be citizens at the time this constitution goes into operation.

    Election

    An election for governor, secretary of state, auditor, treasurer, commissioner of agriculture and attorney general shall be held at such times and places as may be prescribed by law.

    Term of Office

    Their terms of office shall be four years, and shall commence on the first Monday after the second Wednesday of January next after their election.

    Limit on Tenure

    There are no term limits for the office.

    The Attorney General
    Authority

    The primary responsibility of the secretary is to serve as the chief election officer.

    No person, except citizens entitled to vote, shall be elected or appointed to any state, county or municipal office; but the governor and judges must have attained the age of thirty, and the attorney general and senators the age of twenty-five years, at the beginning of their respective terms of service; and must have been citizens of the state for five years next preceding their election or appointment, or be citizens at the time this constitution goes into operation.

    All members are elected.

    Term of Office

    Delegates for the term of two years.

    Authority

    The President also serves as Lieutenant Governor and is the second ranking constitutional officer in the state.

    Election

    The Senate elects the President of the Senate from its membership.

    West Virginia's state senators are not subject to term limits.

    Qualification age

    The Supreme Court Of Appeals
    Authority

    The court shall have appellate jurisdiction in civil cases at law where the matter in controversy, exclusive of interest and costs, is of greater value or amount than three hundred dollars unless such value or amount is increased by the Legislature; in civil cases in equity; in controversies concerning the title or boundaries of land; in proceedings in quo warranto, habeas corpus, mandamus, prohibition and certiorari; and in cases involving personal freedom or the constitutionality of a law. It shall have appellate jurisdiction in criminal cases, where there has been a conviction for a felony or misdemeanor in a circuit court, and such appellate jurisdiction as may be conferred upon it by law where there has been such a conviction in any other court. In criminal proceedings relating to the public revenue, the right of appeal shall belong to the state as well as to the defendant.

    Qualifications

    Justices must have practiced law for at least 10 years to preside on the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia.

    Each of the five justices on the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia is elected in nonpartisan elections and serves a term of 12 years
